back from the cruise and raring to go

by Kathi on Thursday, March 29, 2007

Well last week was one the bigger highlights of my life. Going on a cruise with a bunch of crazy claydies to the land of sun and fresh fruit, laughter, creative energy, and a ship? What more could one ask for. Well, it would of been better if my partner had been there but I did survive without her.

At our last shore stop, Cabo San Lucas, I did a walking tour by myself, just to soak in the atmosphere and see if I could find something for inspiration. Little did I know that by walking into a hole in the wall shop hidden behind all the flash and glitz, would I find the inspiration. Let me preface it with a bit of history. When my mom was alive she was working on a needlepoint Aztec sun calendar. I loved how it was turning out. Mom passed before she got it finished and somewhere the pattern and directions got lost. Well, in this little hole in the wall store there was the calendar….hand painted on suede and signed by the artist. Of course it made me think of the one mom didn’t get finished so I bought it. it was worth every penny in my book. Dead center of the calendar is a great design….the inspiration I was seeking. This will be my next cane. I have started mixing the clay colors and tomorrow I hope to get the blends made. Time will tell if this will be a decent cane or not.

Mad Dash Pre-Cruise

Has finally slowed down….sort of. This morning I baked the last 4 of 50 eyes. Whew. Each one is different and yes I am a bit crazy…ok maybe more then a bit :D

Here are the ones I haven’t shown yet, in three groups, and then the final picture is of them all looking at me.

New Eyes Group One

I am actually rather partialto the orange and red one on the right hand side along with the “Peter Max” smile one right below it.

New Eyes Group 2

there’s a couple in this group I love…like the black kaleidascope one on the upper right.

New Eyes Group 3

in this group I love the mica twisted one in the upper right corner.

Finally…..a whole group shot for you all to see. I swear these guys are like kids. they so did not want to behave while I was trying to get the picture. goofball eyes.

50 DragonEyes oh My!!

and now…I pack up my clay stuff and hit the road to go pick up Connie and her partner at LAX. Catch y’all after the cruise!

are we tired of eyes yet?

I managed to make ten more eyes yesterday. A couple of them are a bit different then the others. Heh, imagine that. Me being different. My silly MusE wanted a wood eye…so the one that seems so gold has a wood grain and there are a few leaves and bling on it. There is also a butterfly eye. Different, but I really like it. Might have to use a few more of my butterfly wing canes. So…here they are.

More eyes!

thanks for looking!

Do I or don’t I?

by Kathi on Wednesday, March 7, 2007

Thats the big question for the night. I just got an email from a woman who’s son loves my dragoneyes. He wanted to know if I was going to write a tutorial on how I make them. Wow….never thought about doing a tute for them. The question is….do I want to share this and watch eyes blossom forth from everyone or do I want to write it for a magazine? Or…do I keep how I make them under my belt. I guess this will take some thinking on my part. and thinking really hurts my brain *g*

I figure maybe I will put it on hold until I make a new eyeball cane, take pictures and write up that part. By then, I will have returned from the cruise and will have gotten some up on ebay to see how they sell. I am not normally selfish with my clay techniques but dang..I want to see if there is a market for these and if so, is it selfish to want to keep it for me for at least a bit, before others start creating? *sigh* tis a dilemma for me for sure. Guess I will let the muse nibble on this for a while. Have a good evening.

more eyes!!

by Kathi on Monday, March 5, 2007

so today I made 8 more eyes. I am jazzed with the direction they seem to be taking. Some of them even have bling on them aka swarovski crystals! I used some of Jana’s canes (with her permission) on three of the eyes. I was so dang happy with how they turned out…I bet y’all could see me doing the Snoopy happy happy dance when they were all done! So…I guess without further ado..here are a couple of pictures for y’all.

3 DragonEyes made with Jana’s and my canes.

5 DragonEyes made with my canes.

I think I am taking a rbeak for the rest of the day. My back is killing. I may make some new canes to use…or raid my 14 canes boxes and see what I can find to use ! Have a great rest of the day!
