So not a happy camper

Today I attempted to finish a cane I had in th process for a couple days. It wasn’t the size of my mondo canes, just a wee pound maybe. Even reducing the components to build the kaleidescope made my wrist ache big time. Just when I put all the pieces together I noticed that where I had the calcified cyst removed three months ago was all swollen. oops. used it too much I thought. Then I felt it. Nope, not the nice mushy feeling of a swollen wrist, but a nice medium large lump that felt just like what the cyst felt like. *sigh* I have this feeling that the cyst is coming back. Back into the splint I go. I guess my time as a caner is coming to and end. At least a caner that makes big canes.

back in the glass saddle again.

ahhh this weekend I spent a few hours in the glass studio creating a sun catcher which will now grace my window (unless someone begs to take it off my hands) It was an order, but that got canceled so it’s mine now…ALL mine :)

Figure Eights

Besides working in the studio, I was also hard at work getting 10 polymer stone pieces done for a swap with a bunch of crazy Australians. Since the swap isn’t over I can’t post a picture or four of what I made but I can give you a hint. It’s stone, made out of polymer clay :D

Tomorrow, I head back out to the glass studio to get a souple pieces into the kiln and to start a Jester sun catcher.

off to the glass studio

After a whirlwind weekend trip to Seattle for my sister’s wedding, the glass urge has gone beyond an urge to a solid 4×4 upside the head. Besides a 4×4 headache, I realized that I really NEED to get into the glass studio for renewing my soul. So today I am hoping to get one sun catcher done and another one started. Yes, I will post pictures when they are done.

The weekend in Seattle. wow….4 days of non-stop insanity. Oy vey. It started at 8am when we left the house to the airport. Munchie traveled with us. This would be the first airplane ride for her. The flight from Bakersfield to LAX is on a turbo prop plane…noisy to say the least. Munchie didn’t like it that much but she was a trooper and slept the rest of the way. Stressed she was not. Then we had a wee bit of a layover at LAX….and then the agent at the gate called us up. See….our flight had been changed a bazillion times by travelocity, with the final agenda was bakersfield to LA to portland to seattle. The gate agent asked if seattle was our final destination. yep. did we need to go to portland? nope. would we like a straight through flight to seattle? Gee…..that one made me think….uh yes!!! So instead of leaving la at 12:30 we left at 1:30, extending that layover by an hour BUT….we got into Seattle an hour earlier then planned. This is a good thing….or so I thought.

Dad picked us up at the airport, then off to the grocery store for a few things for his dinner Friday night, off ot his house, drop him off and head out to the ferry terminal to try and catch the 6:30 (even though the ferry terminal is 20 minutes from his house and it was 5:15-it was friday I knew there was no way we would get the 5:50) Down the hill, phone rings, turn around and back up the hill to dad’s, drop the forgotten groceries and back to the ferry terminal. It was now 5:30… We land at the ferry terminal just as the 5:50 was leaving. No problem….the 6:30 was coming. Could the day get any better?

of course it could. we missed getting on the ferry by two rows of cars. Oh boy howdy, neither Karen or I were happy campers but what could we do? Swim with the car on our back? doubtful. So there we sat, fuming, grumbling, and being just flat out aching cause I had been sitting too damn long. Finally on to the ferry, hot cup of coffee and I might be human enough to make the final leg of the trip. From Bainbridge Island to the motel into Poulsbo. We finally landed at the motel at 8pm….12 hours after we left home. One minor detail I left out……I had to check my bag because the TSA agent in Bakersfield was having a bad day and decided my bag wouldn’t squish enough to go in the overhead bin….which it had been smushed into many many times over the years. My bag didn’t make it to Seattle with me. no clothes, no jammies no nuttin. Good thing the airlines delivers. It was waiting for me at the desk the next morning.

So we hatch out with like a gallon of coffee and head off to my sisters for breakfast…at 10am. Our next stop was going to be placing flowers on my moms grave but the three of us were still jet lagged. (heh….from flying up the coast and NO time change) so back to the motel (after hitting a to die for bakery in Poulsbo) a little more noshing and then we crashed. No problem…except we were supposed to be at the wedding site (my sisters best friend’s farm…they were married in a covered arena on horseback) at 2 to help with the food. At 2pm we woke up. oops. On the road in our “cowboy” finery, my phone rang…sisters freaking. hey…we were only 45 minutes late :D

The wedding was beautiful, the horse behaved (they didn’t poop in the middle of the ceremony), my sister was glowing, her husband is drop dead gorgeous. I am not sure if the happy couple were the biggest hit or if Munchie was. She worked her little tail off keeping me sane. I spent time just being there for my sister and when she told she had nothing borrowed, I took off my wedding band and let her borrow it. when she gave it back she said it kept her centered and calm. This was a good thing.

Saturday night we stayed at my sister’s to keep and eye on her girls, 9 and 12. we had a good time. They have a pekapom and an english bulldog. Munchie wasn’t sure what the hell the snorting slobbering thing was that kept sticking was she thought might be a face in her butt….but there was no nose. Or so she thought. noisy dog but beautiful…for a bulldog. finally off to bed we went. All three of us were exhausted. One minor detail though. Tiggers, the bulldog, sleeps in a crate in the master bedroom….where we were sleeping. Imagine a freight train, machine gun, and chainsaw all happening at once two feet from where your head is. Tiggers is NOT a quite dog, sleeping OR awake. Poor Karen had a hell of a time falling to sleep. we have both decided that our snoring is nothing compared to the dogs. So after a pretty sleepless night we headed off the next morning at 9:30.

On the way back to the ferry we stopped at mom’s grave and placed some flowers, and let the quiet of the wind through the pine trees soothe us. Back on the ferry we went…this time a little more awake, but not much more. More coffee. Once we hit seattle we headed off to west seattle for a hot lunch date with Linda aka DaPuffin of Puffinalia and her husband MrPuffin. good food, good friends, good conversation. what more could one ask for? well….besides the clay that they delivered by hand to me that is. A nap. Sadly we said goodbye (too short of a visit) and off to dads where were would stay until our flight at o’dark hundred Monday morning. We crashed for a couple of hours, then go up for supper. My older brother and his daughter came by for dinner. was good catching up with him and his family. His daughter is turning into a beautiful young woman, but a TALL one. at 20 she is 6′. boy howdy did I feel really really short.

up at 4:30 am Minday morning to leave for the airport by 5. Our flight left at 7am to SFO. We were in SF by 9:30, ate some food (what I didn’t dump all over our coats ::::rolling eyes:::::) and sat. And then we sat some more, and some more and some more. Our plane to Bakersfield was late getting in and late leaving. we finally hit Bakersfield at 2:45 and home by 3:15. Munchie was so dang happy to be home, she climbed up onto the bed and crashed. We decided that looked pretty good and climbed in with her. Just as we were falling asleep…..a chainsaw started up in the yard behinds us. Ahhhhh yes, the joys of being jet lagged. I think we are all recovered now.

And this is why I so *need* to get into the glass studio.

I am feeling the urge

by Kathi on Friday, February 8, 2008

to head out to the glass studio and let my muse run amok. It has been almost 4 years since I have really worked with the stained glass portion and suddenly I am craving it. I think I feel some funky suncatcher coming on, not to mention firing up the kiln and making some free form fused pieces.

Of course this sudden urge would come when I have a deadline for a swap coming up but my gut tells me if I don’t go out and fondle some glass, cut the finger tips, bleed a wee bit and make something, I won’t be able to touch the clay without it all turning to mule puke ( Pat O’s most favorite term) Who knows….there might be some glass items coming to a “store” near you soon!
