What an Honor

by Kathi on Tuesday, May 27, 2008

This morning I noticed Judy Dunn had posted on her Crane Project Blog that she was introducing the folks who are helping with folding wax paper cranes. Imagine my surprise to see that I was the first one she is introducing. It is such an honor to be able to help with this project in any way I can. Thank you Judy for the spirit that drives you, for the burning need to *do something*, and allowing myself and others to join you in any way we can.

claying claying and more claying!!

by Kathi on Tuesday, May 20, 2008

after touching clay again at my guild meeting, I did get a chance to clay ALL DAY on Monday. I had fun making my “tropical nights” blend and decided to make a variation of the blend with varied sized stripes. Here is the blend.

new topical blend

Then I decided I wanted to try to make a Maniguette style bracelet using my favorite blend. She was nice enough to translate the pictorial tutorial into English for this language challenged clayer. Of course I don’t have the PCE Extruder and disks so I had to back up and punt. What I ended up using is a piece of bamboo cut to 1/3 as the “trough” to shape the top. I think I will find or make a new trough that isn’t as deep as the bamboo one. I even amazed myself with sanding the pieces all the way through all of my grits. I haven’t sealed it with any finish, it is just buffed to the 9’s. I guess I should shut up and just show you the bracelet eh? Well here it is.

I think I will make a few more of these in different colored blends. I can also see a few different things I would like to try besides the back filling or for that matter WITH the back filling to adapt it a bit more. Maniguette has beautiful things on her blog, drop by and see all her pretties!

The final push

by Kathi on Monday, May 5, 2008

Is on!. Tomorrow the flooring starts going in. this means today the studio gets totally packed up and moved into either the kitchen, back patio or garage. Then one last room of carpeting to rip out. I also have to move the sectional sofa out and get the last remnant of carpeting from under it. Back? what back? I don’t need no steenkin back!

On a happier note, we had our Relay for Life this weekend (24 hour walk to raise funds for the American Cancer Society) Our Relay, here in Bakersfield, is the second largest in the whole US, the largest in California, and a training site for other relay committees. As of last count we raised over 1.7 million, with money still coming in. The final tally will be at the end of August. I am so very proud of our community and the big companies that match and sponser our event.

I had a table full of creations, many by myself and others donated by my friend Moe, from Hawaii. She sent a box of necklaces and earrings and other things for me to sell to help raise money. I went with a large box of items and came home with a very tiny box. I raised an additional $160 selling these small items.

I promise, dadragon will be back creating within the next couple of weeks. Until then, I will fold wax paper cranes. Happy claying to you all.

well that was a flop

so much of one, I am not even going to post pictures. I knew there was a reason to be afraid to open the kiln door. Instead of a tile of nice pretty bling, some from free form dichroic, some from the glass clay, I have nice free form dichroic bling and clay blobs that don’t look like awareness ribbons at all. Looks like I will be rethinking how I use the powdered glass and binder. I have not given up at all, just backing up a few steps and taking a different direction then attempting to cane from it.

on a different note, while looking for my pickle solution, I found a ton of PMS and cork clay I totally forgot I had. Almost like winning the lottery :D So, I may be doing a combination of glass and PMC soon. decisions decisions.

Have a happy creative day!
